Operating on frozen lakes and rivers places significant stress on a boat’s hull. Ice surfaces can be extremely abrasive and can quickly damage aluminum or fiberglass hulls.

For this reason, many ice airboats use UHMW polyethylene hull protection.

What Is UHMW?

UHMW stands for Ultra High Molecular Weight polyethylene.

It is an extremely durable plastic material known for:

• high abrasion resistance• low friction• excellent impact strength

Because of these properties, UHMW is widely used in industries where surfaces experience heavy wear.

Why UHMW Is Used on Airboats

When airboats travel across ice, the hull often slides directly across the surface.
