Airboats are well known for their ability to travel through extremely shallow water, marshland, and ice. However, traditional airboat designs can produce significant noise levels due to high-speed propellers and high-RPM engines.

In Canada, where airboats are frequently used for hunting, remote travel, and work in natural environments, noise reduction is an important design consideration.

Why Noise Matters

Propeller Design and Noise

One of the largest contributors to airboat noise is propeller speed.

Small propellers spinning at very high RPM tend to produce more noise due to the speed at which the blades move through the air.

An alternative approach is to use larger diameter propellers rotating at lower RPM, which can produce similar thrust while reducing blade tip speed.

Lower tip speed can significantly reduce propeller noise.

 

The Role of Engine Torque

High torque engines make it possible to spin large propellers effectively without needing extremely high RPM.

Diesel engines are particularly well suited to this approach because they produce strong torque at lower engine speeds.

This allows propellers to move large volumes of air efficiently.

 

Engineering for Operator Comfort

Reducing noise is not just about environmental considerations. It also improves the experience for the person operating the airboat.

Quieter propulsion systems can help reduce operator fatigue and make long trips more comfortable.
